RENEWED PROSPECTS for Cross River State’s tourism and economy have emerged following the official transfer of ownership of the Tinapa Business and Leisure Resort from the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) to the state government, a move that has drawn commendation from Senator Eteng Jonah Williams, representing Cross River Central Senatorial District.
The senator hailed Governor Bassey Otu for what he described as decisive and result-oriented leadership in reclaiming one of the state’s most strategic assets. He said the governor’s intervention signified a new chapter in the state’s economic recovery and tourism revitalisation efforts.
Speaking at the official handover ceremony, Senator Williams commended Governor Otu for remaining steadfast in his resolve to restore the economic viability of state-owned assets under the “People’s First” governance agenda, which prioritises recovery and restoration of key infrastructure.
“The governor has shown true leadership by reclaiming what rightly belongs to the Cross River people. His actions reflect sincerity, courage, and a clear vision for a more prosperous state,” Senator Williams stated.
He noted that the transfer of Tinapa Resort’s ownership back to the state would open new opportunities for investment, trade, and job creation, particularly within the tourism and hospitality sectors.
The senator emphasised that Governor Otu’s approach to economic recovery has been characterised by inclusivity, accountability, and a strong commitment to rebuilding public trust through transparent governance.
Senator Williams further reaffirmed his readiness to work closely with the Otu-led administration to ensure that the current momentum towards economic expansion and infrastructure renewal translates into practical, measurable benefits for citizens across Cross River State.
He said he remained committed to supporting legislative and policy frameworks that would strengthen tourism development, private sector participation, and fiscal growth within the state.
The official handover of the Tinapa Business and Leisure Resort on 7 November 2025 marks the conclusion of years of negotiations between the Cross River State Government and AMCON.
The move effectively restores the resort’s ownership to the state, signalling a strategic step toward reviving the once-thriving tourism complex.
Tinapa, located near Calabar, was originally established to serve as a premier business and leisure destination, combining retail, entertainment, and hospitality facilities to attract investors and visitors.
Over the years, the project faced financial and operational challenges that led to its takeover by AMCON, following unresolved debts incurred by previous administrations.
Governor Otu’s administration has since prioritised the recovery of dormant state assets as part of broader reforms aimed at stimulating economic growth and restoring investor confidence.
The return of Tinapa is therefore regarded by state officials and stakeholders as a major breakthrough in the ongoing efforts to reposition Cross River as a leading tourism and investment hub in Nigeria.
During the ceremony, government representatives reaffirmed that plans were already underway to assess the facility’s current state and develop a sustainable roadmap for its redevelopment.
The administration is expected to engage potential investors and private partners to ensure that the resort is restored to optimal functionality in alignment with the state’s tourism master plan.
Senator Williams emphasised that with Tinapa now back under state control, renewed efforts should focus on harnessing the resort’s full economic potential, particularly in promoting local enterprise, expanding tourism value chains, and boosting revenue generation.
He added that the handover represented not just a symbolic victory, but a substantive step toward economic self-reliance for Cross River.
Observers have noted that the senator’s commendation reflects broader public approval of the Otu administration’s determination to safeguard state assets and channel them towards productive use.
The transfer is expected to strengthen the state’s capacity to attract domestic and international tourists, revitalise small businesses, and create employment opportunities for young people in surrounding communities.
Senator Williams, a former Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, also underscored the importance of continuity in governance and the need for collective responsibility among stakeholders to sustain the gains achieved through the asset recovery.
He expressed confidence that the governor’s recovery initiative would set a precedent for efficient management of public infrastructure and sustainable development planning.
The senator reiterated that his office would continue to collaborate with the executive arm of government to promote legislative measures that reinforce transparency and efficiency in the management of public investments.
He noted that effective oversight and stakeholder participation remain vital in ensuring that reclaimed assets like Tinapa deliver tangible social and economic dividends to the people.
The handover of the Tinapa Business and Leisure Resort to the Cross River State Government, completed on 7 November 2025, formally concludes its period under AMCON’s management and restores full ownership to the state.
The administration of Governor Bassey Otu has also indicated that detailed assessments and redevelopment plans will follow to ensure the facility’s effective use for the benefit of the people.
Senator Eteng Jonah Williams reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the process through legislative collaboration that aligns with the government’s economic and infrastructural objectives.
