FREQUENT NETWORK disruptions, slow internet speeds, and limited rural connectivity continue to frustrate Nigerian businesses and individuals.
Stakeholders, including government officials, industry leaders, and consumer advocates, have urged telecom firms to prioritise reliable and inclusive services to drive Nigeria’s digital economy forward.
Dr. Adewale Yusuf, President of the Nigerian Digital Economy Forum, criticised the sector’s inability to meet growing demands, noting: “Telecommunication is the backbone of Nigeria’s digital transformation.
Yet, inadequate services and poor infrastructure create barriers to growth, innovation, and inclusion.”
He pointed to the increasing reliance on digital platforms for education, e-commerce, healthcare, and financial services.
Prince Sins Bilesanmi, National President of Association of Telephones, Cable TV and Internet Subscribers of Nigeria (ATCIS), accused operators of failing to provide value for subscribers’ payments.
He warned of stronger subscriber actions in 2025 if service quality does not improve.
He added: “Telecom firms must invest in expanding rural coverage and improve network stability using technologies like 5G.”
Bilesanmi also called for lower data and call tariffs, insisting operators engage subscribers before any tariff hikes.
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) assured its commitment to enforce service quality benchmarks.
It pledged to penalise operators that fail to meet these standards while fostering an environment conducive to telecom growth.
Stakeholders highlighted the importance of robust cybersecurity measures amid increasing online activities.
Collaboration among telcos, regulators, and the government was deemed essential to achieving reliable and affordable connectivity for all Nigerians.
