PLANS FOR Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary will proceed without the traditional parade, following a decision by the Federal Government to cancel the event, the Federal Government has announced.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, announced the cancellation in a statement issued on Monday.
The parade had been scheduled to hold on Wednesday, 1 October, as part of activities marking the anniversary.
According to the statement, the government emphasised that the decision does not lessen the importance of the occasion.
“The cancellation is in no way a diminishment of the significance of this milestone anniversary, and the government remains committed to celebrating Nigeria’s 65th year of independence with dignity and enthusiasm,” the release stated.
It further confirmed that all other activities and programmes already lined up for the Independence Anniversary will continue as planned.
The Federal Government also expressed regret for the inconvenience the decision might cause to Nigerians, the diplomatic corps, and invited guests.
The statement noted: “The Government deeply regrets any inconvenience caused by this cancellation. The Federal Government appreciates the understanding, support and cooperation of all Nigerians, members of the diplomatic community, and invited guests.”
The statement, signed by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations, on 29 September 2025, notes that the announcement concluded with a call for unity and national support for ongoing government reforms.
It read: “The Federal Government urges Nigerians to support the reforms of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR in making Nigeria a greater nation.”
