GUNFIRE SHATTERED the early hours of Friday in Damaturu when unidentified attackers struck the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) council secretariat in Yobe State, wounding a police officer on duty.
The incident occurred at about 2.00am on 19 September 2025 when armed assailants opened fire on the secretariat building. The attackers shot the police officer on guard, targeting his leg, before escaping the scene. According to initial accounts, the wounded officer was rushed to the emergency unit of the Police Hospital in Damaturu, where he is currently receiving treatment.
Confirming the attack, the Chairman of the NUJ Yobe Council, Rajab Ismail Mohammed, described the incident as both “unfortunate and scary” for journalists operating in the state. He stressed that the strike had a psychological impact on media professionals who already operate under difficult security conditions.
“This attack represents not just an assault on a security guard but an intimidation tactic against the press corps in Yobe State,” Mohammed said. He further urged authorities to prioritise the protection of journalists and their institutions.
The NUJ chairman called on security agencies to act swiftly, noting the urgency of an immediate and thorough investigation. “We call on security agencies to immediately launch a comprehensive investigation into this matter and ensure those responsible are brought to justice,” he stated.
The shooting has intensified concerns over the safety of press organisations in Nigeria’s northeast, where journalists often face heightened risks due to insecurity. The NUJ secretariat, which serves as a hub for professional activities in the state, has now become the latest target of armed violence, underscoring the vulnerability of civic institutions in the region.
Authorities are yet to issue further details on the identity of the attackers or possible motives behind the assault. Security operatives have since been deployed to the area to strengthen surveillance around media facilities.
While the injured officer continues to receive treatment, the Yobe NUJ leadership reaffirmed its commitment to press freedom and called on government and security stakeholders to guarantee a safer working environment for journalists.
The NUJ council in Yobe reiterated that the incident should not only be viewed as an attack on one individual but as an effort to undermine press activities in the state.
